This course will offer a comparative overview of approaches to human rights across a number of legal systems. The course will focus on human rights law in North America and Europe, but students also will be introduced to approaches in other areas of the world. Through readings, exercises, and written work, students will explore the cultural foundations of human rights law, its varying expressions in domestic and international legal orders, and the processes through which it is developed and enforced. The course will primarily be offered in Salzburg, Austria, as part of a summer academic study abroad program, and will be co-taught by a political science professor from University of the Pacific and a law professor from McGeorge, with guest lectures from professors from colleges and universities around the world.
