Kirsten Schmalenbach was born in Hagen-Halden (NRW). She studied law in Marburg and Cologne. From 2003-2010 she was a University Professor at the Institute for International Law and International Relations at the Karl-Franzens-University Graz. Since then, she has been a University Professor of International and European Law at the Paris-Lodron University Salzburg.
She’s held positions in various organizations, such as Head of the International Law Department, Member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Faculty of Law of the University of Vienna, Chair of the Academic Advisory Board of the Faculty of Law of the University of Jena, Member of the Academic Editorial Board of the International Organizations Law Review (peer), Chair of the PhD Commission, and Deputy Head of the Austrian Institute for Human Rights (ÖIM).
The main areas of her work have been law of international organizations, international and European development cooperation, legal sources of international law, international human rights and external relations of the European Union.
