The Ethics of Healthcare in Global Perspective

This year's event was a special lecture and discussion focusing on the ethical challenges facing the United States health care system. T.R. Reid, longtime correspondent and bureau chief for the Washington Post and a documentary film producer and frequent guest on National Public Radio, delivered a keynote lecture entitled "The Ethics of Healthcare in Global Perspective," drawing on the themes he explored in his New York Times bestseller The Healing of America.

T.R. Reid's latest documentary, "U.S. Health Care: The Good News," premiered on PBS stations everywhere on Feb. 16, 2012. The documentary can be viewed online.

Constitutional law expert Professor Leslie Jacobs followed with an overview of the constitutional challenge to the 2010 health reform bill scheduled for an extraordinary week of argument before the United States Supreme Court in March. An Op-Ed, 'Tax' is crucial health care detail, by Jacobs appeared in the Sacramento Bee on Sunday, Feb. 26.

The event took place on Thursday, March 1, 2012 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Lecture Hall on the McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific campus, 3200 Fifth Ave., Sacramento, and was open to all. There was an extended question and answer session after both talks. Admission was free.

Professor Paul D. Paton, Director, Ethics Across the Professions Initiative, McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific, moderated. This program was made possible in part with the support of The Sierra Health Foundation.
