On January 18, 2017, President Eibeck issued a communication to the university community affirming the University's support for and commitment to all students, including undocumented students who are enrolled or seek to enroll as students at the University of the Pacific.
On January 26, 2017, the McGeorge School of Law faculty voted to endorse this communication and to adopt its own Statement of Principles and Norms in Support of All of the McGeorge School of Law Members, including Undocumented Students. The mission of the McGeorge School of Law is "to provide a student-centered education that prepares its graduates for productive, successful, and ethical careers in law and other professions that serve society, and for leadership in building a diverse society committed to global social justice. The Statement reads, in part, "[c]onsistent with our mission, and in recognition of the rich diversity of the United States, and especially of the State of California, the McGeorge School of Law will continue to welcome and support all students without regard to their immigration status."
The issuance of this important statement follows a program held on January 25 at the University of the Pacific during which Professor Raquel Aldana and five McGeorge School of Law alumni, Sameera Ali '12, Aaron Brieno '14, Rebecca Caporale, '15, Brian López, '12, and Fernanda Pereira, '97, educated over 150 members of the Stockton community about their rights and their future in the State of California. The event was organized by Dr. Ines Ruiz-Huston, Latinx Community Outreach and Resource Center "El Centro" Coordinator of the University of the Pacific and co-sponsored by the McGeorge School of Law, El Concilio, Univision, and Pacific Legal Scholars.
The Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Executive Committee issues a Statement on the Executive Order Restricting U.S. Entry for Certain Foreign Nationals on Jan. 30, 2017. The statement concludes with "The AALS urges the Trump administration to withdraw this Executive Order as inconsistent with freedom of inquiry and with basic principles of law."
