The 2016 spring campaign ended on a high note for the McGeorge mock trial team with an Outstanding Trial Brief award in the South Texas Challenge, which was held in mid-April in Houston. Nicole Vera, Lauryn Tully, Heather Phillips, and Alex Smith were an octo-finalist in the event that saw Campbell University beat Stetson in the title match. Jesse Saucedo, '11, and Jason Schaff, '06, coached the team.
Back in February, Kathryne Baldwin and Kitty Tetrault fell one vote short of advancing out of the Texas Young Lawyers National Trial Competition Region 13 tournament held in Seattle. Ryan Roebuck and Nia Traylor also represented McGeorge admirably with Keith Hill, '96 and Thien Ho, '98, coaching the teams. Harvard went on to win the national championship.
In March, a McGeorge team made it to semifinal round of the American Association for Justice regional in Seattle. Michelle Ahronovitz, Josh Hudson, Ashley Pane and Shoeb Mohammad, coached by Alan Donato, '09, and Jeff Schaff, '09, competed as a foursome in the tourney, which was won by UC Berkeley. A month later, Drexel defeated Georgetown in the 16-team national finals in New Orleans.
Tanner Puryear, Jose Parra, Riha Pathak and Kyle Chin, under the direction of coaches David Norton, '13, Teal Ericson, '14, and Tiffany Wynn, '14, turned in a commendable performance in March as the home team in the National Ethics Trial Competition, won by Stetson.
The McGeorge mock trial team competed in four fall 2015 events with its best performance coming in the 12th Annual Buffalo-Niagara Mock Trial Competition. Shoeb Mohammad was cited for best cross-examination in the preliminary rounds of the 40-team tournament, which was held Nov. 7-10 in Buffalo City Court. He and his teammates, Heather Phillips, Alex Smith and Nia Traylor, finished seventh in the competition. One of the teams they defeated in the opening rounds, St. John's, turned out to be the eventual champion. David Norton, '13, Jesse Saucedo, '11, and Teal Ericson, '14, coached the team.
Michelle Ahronovitz, Josh Hudson, Ashley Pane and Lauryn Tully represented McGeorge in mid-October in San Francisco at the National Criminal Trial Advocacy Competition sponsored by the California Attorneys for Criminal Justice. They fought hard, but could not advance in the tourney that saw Florida State beat host UC Hastings in the title match. Alan Donato, '09, and Jeff Schaff, '09, coached the locals.
Kathryne Baldwin, Ryan Roebuck, Kitty Tetrault and Jose Parra competed in the National Civil Trial event, held Nov. 13-15 at Loyola Los Angeles. They battled a strong field before falling in the quarterfinals. UC Berkeley beat Georgetown in the finals. Keith Hill, '96, accompanied the team of advocates and witnesses, who were also mentored by Jake Weaver, '14.
Ashley Pane and Michelle Ahronovitz wrapped up the season in mid-November at Fordham's Judge Kelly Invitational. They advanced to the top eight of the 18-team event with Brooklyn outpointing Georgetown in the championship match. Coach Allen Donato tutored the tandem at the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, in Manhattan.
