Immigration Clinic Students Volunteer at Mexican Consulate

February 10, 2015

Students from the Immigration Law Clinic volunteered at the 2015 Steps to College Fair hosted by the Mexican Consulate this past Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015. The fair is a one-stop educational event for students interested in pursuing higher education. The fair featured more than 40 colleges and universities. Over 4,000 people were expected to attend the event. Participants received assistance in applying for financial aid, college counseling and immigration advising.

Second-year day students Keeley Nickelson and Jessica Melgar as well as LLM student Emmanuel Asiriuwa provided immigration consultations under the supervision of the clinic’s supervising attorney, Blake Nordahl. The students provided consultations regarding eligibility for benefits under President Obama’s recent announcement of deferred action for parents of US citizen or permanent resident children, known as DAPA. Potential applicants must additionally establish that they have lived in the United States since Jan. 1, 2010 and meet other character requirements. McGeorge alumni Brian Lopez and Raissa Morris volunteered at the event as well. Applications for DAPA will not be available until later this spring or early summer.

This summer the Immigration Law Clinic plans to provide further services related to DAPA during the summer. For additional information, please contact the Immigration Law Clinic at 916.340.6080.
