Two McGeorge students participated in the Inter-American Summer Program in Guatemala field placement program from June 23 to Aug. 8, 2014.
Jamal Hartenstein, '16, had an internship with Supreme Court of Costa Rica. He participated in a pilot project which allowed him to rotate among the various chambers of the Court, allowing him to work on several matters on appeal ranging from the commercial to the criminal. Jamal attended hearings, visited regional courts, and even wrote a few sections of the opinions of the court.
Patrick Lewis, '16, had an internship with the NGO CALAS, one of top environmental justice groups in Guatemala. He interviewed dozens of environmental activists around a controversial mining project in Guatemala (by Tahoe Resources) and also revised several other interviews in preparation for a book. Patrick designed the survey instrument and conducted the interviews all in Spanish. He will continue this work during fall semester 2014 with Professor Raquel Aldana as a directed research project.
