A McGeorge team advanced to the national finals of the 21st Annual Thomas Tang National Moot Court Competition with a strong showing in one of the regionals in October.
Eurick O'Bryant and Michelle Pai will represent the school on Nov. 7-10, 2013, in Kansas City, Missouri, after finishing as a semifinalist at the Tang Western Regional, which was held Oct. 11-12, 2013, in San Francisco. Two teams from host UC Hastings that battled in the regional finals also made the nationals.
O'Bryant and Pai did not know their fate until the last of five regionals across the country concluded last weekend. Their ticket to the 16-team nationals was particularly rewarding for O'Bryant, who won the Best Oralist Award at the San Francisco regional. A second McGeorge team, Jeffrey Hammer and Michael Heumann, also represented the law school admirably. Professor Hether McFarlane, attorney Erich Shiners,'06, and Nikole Omotoy coached both teams.
McGeorge has placed a team in the Tang nationals in four of the last five years. Only nine schools, however, have ever claimed the national title, which was won by the University of Colorado last year. The National Asian-Pacific American Bar Association sponsors the annual event, which attracts teams from more than 50 law schools.
The nationally ranked McGeorge moot court team will send entries to three competitions later this fall, the San Diego National Criminal Procedure Moot, the Pepperdine National Entertainment Law Moot, and the New York National.
