First-term Congressman Ami Bera

First-term Congressman Ami Bera gave a rousing, hopeful speech to the McGeorge graduating class on May 18, 2013, at Sacramento's Memorial Auditorium.

A medical doctor, Bera drew on his past and told the new 319 Juris Doctorate graduates and 20 LLM holders in attendance that they have every reason to stay optimistic in the face of difficult economic times. He also advised them to never shun the path less taken.

"When it comes to your career, takes some chances if that's what calls out to you," Bera said. "It may not be straight ahead of you. It might be something that catches your peripheral vision. Those following a concrete path might snicker, discourage you or even make literary references to Don Quixote. And make no mistake. Stepping off the path of the concrete will take an act of courage — and maybe even a leap of faith."

"For me, I've always found stepping off the concrete and onto the cool grass always was more vibrant — more exciting, and more authentic. And taking that unique path might take you someplace totally unexpected. Who knows? You might walk across the grass and right up the steps into the halls of congress. That however will only happen if you open yourself up the world of what is possible.
