Edward “Ned” Spurgeon was introduced as the inaugural holder of the Gordon D. Schaber Chair in Health Law and Policy on February 8 at a reception at the Sierra Health Foundation.

Spurgeon, the former law school dean at the University of Utah and the University of Georgia, is currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law at McGeorge. He has written extensively in the areas of elder law, trusts and estates, and estate planning. He serves as executive director of a national foundation’s Center on Law and Aging and director of the National Senior Citizens Law Center.

The law school’s first academic chair honors the late Gordon D. Schaber, who served as dean of McGeorge from 1957 to 1991 and built the school into an internationally recognized legal institution. A visionary in legal education, he foresaw an increased need for legal structure surrounding the American health care system in the 21st century.
