Clay Calvert, ’91, has been named the inaugural holder of the John and Ann Curley Professorship in First Amendment Studies in Penn State University’s College of Communications.
A professor of journalism and co-director of the Pennsylvania Center for the First Amendment, he is one of the country's most prolific media law scholars. He is author or coauthor of more than 75 law-review articles-more than any legal scholar who teaches in a nationally accredited journalism-mass communications program. He also is the author of a book, Voyeur Nation: Media, Privacy and Peering in Modern Culture, and coauthor of the field’s market-leading mass media law textbook. The Curley family provided Penn State with a major gift to establish the endowed professorship. John Curley is the former president, chairman and CEO of Gannett Co. Inc. “Clay Calvert is an outstanding first choice to hold this professorship,” John Curley said. “He is a talented, articulate leader in the First Amendment field and a brilliant scholar.”
