Birgit Fladager, ’86, was honored as Alumna of the Year at the McGeorge commencement ceremony on May 13 at Sacramento’s Memorial Auditorium.
The chief deputy district attorney for Stanislaus County, she played a key role in the successful prosecution of Scott Peterson in a high-profile 2004 murder trial. A veteran of nearly 100 criminal trials, Fladager worked on the Peterson case from the start. But she did not attend the trial regularly nor question a witness until late in the trial. Her carefully worded queries withstood objections from a high-profile defense team that had initially dominated the proceeding. Her calm courtroom demeanor and professionalism played a pivotal role in the prosecution’s attainment of a murder conviction. In May 2005, she received a “Homerun Hitter’s Award of Excellence” from the National District Attorneys Association. She is running for the position of Stanislaus County district attorney this year.
