Welcome: On behalf of the faculty and staff of the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law, we look forward to welcoming you to Salzburg and to meeting each of you in person in early July.

We are extremely pleased to be expecting a very large enrollment this year. The sheer number of students as well as the use of 3 different housing facilities will, however, present certain communication challenges. Your cooperation will be most appreciated. In order to facilitate communication, we will frequently make announcements in classes and we will post announcements and notices outside the Pacific McGeorge office in the Law Faculty and in the reception areas of the housing buildings.

Housing/Early Arrival and Key Deposit:
In June, you will receive an email notifying you of your housing assignment and your roommate, if applicable. If you wish to stay in Salzburg a few extra days after the program ends, you may be able to stay in the same residence building that you will use during the program. However, you must make your own reservation for any extra days by contacting the appropriate housing office directly, and you will have to pay the cost of staying any extra days yourself. Because the rooms will be occupied by students from the University of Salzburg until just before the start of our program, it will not be possible to check into the rooms prior to July 4, 2009. Students will stay in the three following residences during the program:
Wolf Dietrichheim
Wolf-Dietrich-Strasse 16
A-5020 Salzburg, Austria
tel.: 43.662.87.16.91
fax: 43.662.88.28.967
email:
Wolf Dietrichheim
Thomas Michelsheim
Wolf-Dietrich-Strasse 37
A-5020 Salzburg, Austria
tel.: 43.662.87.16.91
fax: 43.662.88.28.967
Thomas Michelsheim
AYN Hotel Salzburg
Glockengasse 4b
A-5020 Salzburg, Austria tel. 43.1.512.7493
AYN Hotel Salzburg
Your residence building may require a key deposit, which will be forfeited if you lose your key but will be returned to you at time of check out and upon return of your room key.

The three housing facilities are open to the public during the summer months, and although we have reserved many of the rooms for the period of our program, there will be other people staying in the buildings as well. Additionally, students from our program will be studying at all hours of the day and night. Therefore, it is essential that everyone refrain from making unnecessary noise inside the buildings, especially after 10:00 p.m. Reports of excessive noise will be investigated, and anyone found responsible will be required to vacate the premises.

Books and Reading Assignments:
Books for all courses are included in your tuition fee and will be distributed to you either prior to the program or on Saturday, July 4, during the check-in/registration period. Reading assignments will be distributed via email prior to the start of the program.

Saturday, 4th July, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Check-in/Registration
For those arriving in Salzburg on Saturday, July 4, you may check into your room in your residence beginning at 10:00 a.m. Note that the Wolf Dietrichheim and the Thomas Michelsheim are under the same management, and the reception desk for both is located in the lobby of the Wolf Dietrichheim. The two buildings are one block from each other on Wolf-Dietrich-Strasse. If you have been assigned to a room in the Thomas Michelsheim, you will need to go first to the Wolf Dietrichheim in order to check in and obtain your room key. The Kolpinghaus is under separate management, but room check-in is also available at that residence beginning at 10:00 a.m. After hours room check-in is possible at all three residences. A buffet breakfast is included daily at all the residences.
Regardless of where you are residing during the program, you may check-in for the program, pick up your course books and reading assignments, if you do not already have them, and sign-up for optional activities in the lobby of the Wolf Dietrichheim between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. or in the lobby of the AYN Hotel Salzburg between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Note: You may check into your room at any time after 10:00 a.m. on July 4, including after hours, but a program representative will be at the residences for program check-in only at the aforementioned times.
If you arrive too late for program check-in on Saturday, go directly to your assigned residence, check into your room, then pick up your course books and reading assignments in your residence lobby, and join us on Sunday at the opening dinner and for the “Get Acquainted” bike ride (see below) if you can. You will be able to complete the program check-in any time on Monday at the McGeorge office in the University of Salzburg Law Faculty.

Sunday, 5th July, 9:00 a.m. “Get Acquainted” Bike Ride
For those interested, there will be a “Get Acquainted Bike Ride” on Sunday morning, led
by the law students from the University of Salzburg who will be participating in our program. The Salzburg area is wonderful for biking and, weather permitting, the group will take a leisurely bike tour on Sunday up the Salzach River to the Kaiser Bierbräurei, a brewery/Bier Garten, in Kaltenhausen near the town of Hallein. The entire distance is about 12 km or 8 miles each way. The group will depart the Wolf Dietrichheim at 9:00 a.m. and return in the mid-afternoon. For those not wishing to bicycle the entire distance, part of the group will stop at the Waldbad, a small lake about halfway to Kaltenhausen. The lake is a popular spot for swimming, so be sure to bring a towel and bathing suit if you would like to stop there.
If the weather is uncooperative and we need to cancel, we will notify the reception desks at each housing facility by 8:30 a.m. Sunday. So if it looks at all unpleasant, check at your reception. It will be an easy, essentially flat tour. All are capable and all are welcome. If you would like to join, let us know when you check in on Saturday. We will have bike rental and other information available. The cost of bike rental is included in the tuition for the program.

Sunday 5th July, 7:00 PM. Opening Dinner
The Opening Dinner will be at the FESTUNGSRESTAURANT located within the historic fortress overlooking the city. Please come and meet your colleagues and professors, including Justice and Mrs. Kennedy. Cost of dinner is included, and there will be a cash bar for drinks. Dress is casual, but not sloppy. We will lead a group from the Wolf-Dietrichheim departing at 6:30. Otherwise, check the map included in your registration packet for the location of the lower station of the funicular that runs between the Old City and the fortress. The cost of riding the funicular from near the Cathedral up to the fortress is included with the dinner. However, in order to be able to be able to ride free, it is essential that everyone be at the bottom station of the funicular (seilbahn) by not later than 6:50 p.m. If you should happen to arrive after the rest of the group has already traveled to the top, please tell the person at the ticket booth that you are with the McGeorge group. However, we cannot guarantee that anyone arriving late will be allowed to take the funicular without paying.

Salzburg can become quite warm during the summer, and most buildings, including the residences, are not air-conditioned, so light casual clothing is appropriate for all classes. Rain occurs throughout the year, so it is advisable to bring a raincoat and/or umbrella. A sweater or light jacket is also a good idea in case the weather turns cool. July temperatures may range anywhere from about 50 degrees F. (10 C.) to 92 F. (33 C.).

Salzburg is a great city for walking, and for most sights, you will not need to use public transportation. All three of the student residences are about a 10-minute walk from the Old City. It is also possible to rent a bicycle for the duration of the program at a relatively low cost.
If you decide to ride the city buses, be sure to either carry or purchase a validated ticket. Tickets are available through machines found at all major stops. They may be purchased for single rides, unlimited rides for 24 hours, or unlimited rides for one week. Regardless of the type of ticket you have, be sure to validate by stamping it in one of the machines inside the bus the first time that you get on to ride. After the first validation, the ticket remains valid for the entire period for which it was purchased. Inspectors make periodic spot checks, and riders without valid tickets can be fined on the spot.

Should you become ill during the program, please let someone in the McGeorge office know. We will find an English-speaking doctor who will be able to see you the same day. We strongly advise you to have medical insurance that will cover any illness or other medical need that may occur while you are abroad, but regardless of insurance coverage, you will be expected to pay for medical services when rendered and then seek reimbursement when you return home.
Austria, as a member of the
European Union, uses the Euro as currency. The easiest way to get cash at a favorable
exchange rate is through an ATM machine. These are located at airports, train stations and at all banks. Instructions in the machines are written in English, and your home ATM card, as long as it has a 4-digit PIN number, will work in them. If your PIN is more than four digits, you may wish to change it before you leave home. For those flying into
Germany or any other
European country that uses the Euro, you can obtain cash upon arrival in the airport, and you will be able to use the same currency in Austria. Remember that the United Kingdom and a few other
European countries do not use the Euro. As of November 2008, the Euro is worth about US$1.26. This means that if you have a $300 daily limit on cash withdrawals from your US bank, you may be limited to 200 Euros at a time from an ATM machine. Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted for purchases in stores and restaurants. A reasonable daily budget during the program for incidentals and meals other than breakfastshould be about US$50.

Internet Access:
All the student residences have high-speed internet access that may be used by those with their own laptops. The Wolf Dietrichheim and the AYN Hotel Salzburg have a cable plug in each room, but you will need to bring with you or purchase in Salzburg a cable to connect to the plug. The Thomas Michelsheim has a dedicated room with cables that students may use at no charge. Unfortunately, the University of Salzburg Law Faculty does not have sufficient computer facilities for all the students in our group. Because of this, students without laptops wanting internet access during the program should use one of the many internet cafes in Salzburg. The following three internet cafes are reasonably priced and have extended hours:
The
Internetcafe Cyber, Mozartplatz 5, 5020 Salzburg
Tel.: 0662.844822; Fax: 0662.822228-12
Internetcafe Piterfun (near rail station)
Ferdinand-Porsche. Strasse 7, 5020 Salzburg
Tel.: 0662.878414
Internet Cafe Piterfun
Internetcafe BIGNET, Judengasse 5-7, 5020 Salzburg
Tel.: 0662.647470
At most internet cafes, you can also buy telephone cards that will allow you to call the United States at very reasonable prices. These cards, however, will not work from the telephones in your room at the student residence. However, you may make calls to the U.S. from the telephone in your room at competitive rates. Furthermore, you may arrange for international cell phone service before leaving the U.S. by contacting AT&T or another service provider. You can find detailed information about using cell phone service while traveling abroad by going to
http://cellphones.org/abroad.php. IT MAY NOT BE WORTH THE TROUBLE to bring with you a laptop with appropriate software for internet connection in Salzburg as there are no plugs or internet connections in the classrooms.

For the last few years, we have arranged a trip to Vienna during the program. Assuming
there is interest, we will do so again this year. The trip is entirely optional and the cost, although modest, is not included in the program.

The courses offered at the Salzburg Summer Program are as demanding and challenging as those offered at Pacific McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. Three weeks pass very quickly, so it is critically important to keep up with the reading assignments on a daily basis. Timely attendance at classes is mandatory and is a necessity given the intensive nature of the lectures. The cost of course books is included in your tuition. Books will be distributed prior to the start of the program and at registration at your residence building on Saturday. |
