Professor Harris clerked for Judge Frank M. Coffin of the U.S. First Circuit Court of Appeals following graduation from law school, then began his legal practice with Altshuler & Berzon in San Francisco. He moved to Morrison & Foerster in 1987, becoming a partner in 1990. He was appointed to serve as associate counsel in the Office of Independent Counsel Lawrence Walsh in order to assist as trial counsel in the prosecution of former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger. In 1996, he left private practice to join the law faculty at the University of Utah, where he taught Trial Advocacy, Appellate Advocacy, Civil Procedure and Legal Ethics.
