London School of Economics and Political Science

Marc Galanter is one of the nation’s most prominent scholars studying litigation, lawyers, and legal culture. His article on "Why the ‘Haves’ Come Out Ahead" is one of the most-cited law review articles of all time, and he is also recognized as one of the most trenchant analysts of the modern trends transforming the legal profession, especially the growing dominance of large law firms.

From the 1970s through today, the "tort reform" agenda has dominated much of the public discussion about what remedies should be available to injured parties. California’s 1975 Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act (MICRA) was just one small piece of an intense and continuing national debate. Professor Galanter will explore the origins of the tort reform controversy.

Professor Galanter is the John and Rylla Bosshard Professor of Law and South Asian Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and LSE Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
