Fred R. Buenrostro Jr., ’80, has served as the CalPERS chief executive officer since December 2002, administering the nation’s largest public pension fund. CalPERS provides retirement and health benefits to more than 1.4 million current and retired California public employees and their families. Buenrostro oversees CalPERS staff, budget, and operations, spanning investments, health, and retirement benefits administration, actuarial and employer services, and other supplemental programs.

He came to CalPERS with more than 25 years experience in public service. He served as the representative to the CalPERS board and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System board for two State Controllers, three State Treasurers, and the director of the Department of Personnel Administration.
