Trial Advocacy Preference Form

Trial Advocacy will be offered during the Fall Semester of 2008 in four sections in the Day Division and one section in the Evening Division. SENIORS have preference; if any vacancies remain, other students who have completed Evidence or are currently enrolled in Evidence may be admitted.

For the first twelve weeks, the course will meet for one hour per week in the Courtroom for lecture. You have the option to attend Monday morning lecture from 8:45-9:45 am or Monday evening lecture from 5:00-6:00 pm (except Sec. 1, who must attend the 8:45-9:45 am lecture). You will also meet for an additional two hours per week with your section for student exercises. (See below for class days & times). The last two weeks of the semester are devoted to day-long trials, scheduled Monday through Saturday.

ENROLLMENT WILL BE LIMITED TO A TOTAL OF 72 STUDENTS. All students who sign up will be “registered” for the course, but the actual “enrollment” will not be decided until all such “registrants” have been received. Then, in the event of “over-registration,” a lottery will be used to determine who will be actually admitted to the course and “enrolled.” The lottery will be conducted as follows:

  • Students wishing to take Trial Advocacy should register for the course, not for a specific section. Students should indicate their preferences for sections on the form below. Each student will have one place in the lottery.
  • Students who register for Trial Advocacy in the Fall Semester of 2008 but who are “bumped” as a result of the Fall Semester lottery will be given priority for placement in the Spring Semester class.
  • Evening Division students will be given preference for the evening section.
  • Students graduating in Dec. 2008, or in Dec.2009 and who are also candidates for the Advocacy Certificate, will be given first preference. Students graduating in May will be given second preference. December graduating students and Certificate candidates should check the appropriate box on form.
  • A student will be “bumped” from the course only if all sections chosen by the student are already filled.

For additional information, contact Prof. Jay Leach (916-739-7002) in the Center for Legal Advocacy.

If you register online, register for Trial Advocacy (CRN 80062 – Catalog # DE812) & fill out the Trial Advocacy Preference Form (link to form listed on the Registration Home Page under Fall 2008).

Any student failing to submit the Trial Advocacy Preference Form will not be registered in the course.
