Professor Steve McCaffrey

A globetrotter whose travels frequently take him halfway round the world, Professor Steve McCaffrey lives, writes and teaches international law. One of the world’s foremost authorities on international watercourses, he’s currently consulting on three major projects. He is an advisor to the 10-country Nile River Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement, a consultant to the British-led legal team advising the Palestinian Authority on water negotiations with Israel, and part of the legal team working for the government of Nicaragua in a river rights dispute with Costa Rica. Oxford University Press recently published the second edition of one of his books, The Law of International Watercourses. One of the few Americans to ever chair the UN’s International Law Commission, McCaffrey describes his international exploits as exhilarating, but he’s quick to point out his passion for teaching has never wavered. “There’s an adrenaline that flows when you’re in the classroom. I enjoy interacting with students and get great satisfaction from their successes as they move out into practice,” he says.
