Linzer Looks Outside Legal Boxes

November 07, 2006

The 14 th Annual Pacific McGeorge Distinguished Speakers Series continues on Thursday, November 7 with the appearance of University of Houston Law Center Professor Peter Linzer. The noted contract law scholar will speak on “Outside Legal Boxes,” a presentation based on his 2001 Wisconsin Law Review article, “Rough Justice,” which dealt with cases where the facts did not quite fit in the usual legal boxes, such as tort, contract, reliance, restitution or business torts, but nonetheless called for relief, leading the courts to bend the doctrinal boundary lines, sometimes in ways that violated the basic notions of the categories eventually used. Professor Linzer practiced law both as a Wall Street lawyer and as an assistant corporation counsel for the City of New York before joining academia. He has edited two editions of A Contracts Anthology and was the editorial reviser of the Restatement (Second) of Contracts. Linzer is the chair-elect of the Contracts Section of the Association of American Law Schools. Linzer’s public lecture will commence at 4 p.m. in Classroom H. Local members of the bar and judiciary are invited to join students and faculty for the lecture and an informal reception to follow at 5 p.m. in the McGeorge House Dining Room.
