SUNY Buffalo Victorious In First Ethics Competition

March 16, 2006

The State University of New York at Buffalo walked off with the top prize against formidable competition in the inaugural Pacific McGeorge’s National Ethics Trial Competition, held March 16-18 in Sacramento.

Buffalo defeated the Pacific McGeorge teams of Carolyn Caforio 3D, Victor Pippens 2D, Megan Schwedhelm 3D and James Kuhne 2D in the finals after those two teams had slipped by Stetson and South Texas in the semifinals.

Fourteen schools from across the country competed in the event. Other teams included Chicago-Kent, Connecticut, UC Davis, Denver, Fordham, Georgetown, Georgia, Houston, Pepperdine and Temple so most of the top-ranked trial advocacy programs in the nation were represented. Students were judged on their professional conduct and knowledge of professional responsibility as well as their advocacy skills.

Dreyer, Babich, Buccola & Callaham, LLP, one of the leading plaintiffs firms in the state, and the ABA Section of Litigation were co-sponsors.

Distinguished members of the bench and bar, including judges of the U.S. District Court itself, and members of the Anthony M. Kennedy and Milton Schwartz Inns of Court were judges for the event. All competition rounds were held at the Robert T. Matsui U.S. Courthouse.
