Full Profile

Most people hate getting a traffic ticket, but for Bill Reece '12, a traffic ticket was the catalyst for becoming an attorney. "I went to court and was fascinated watching the process." Already majoring in biology at Virginia Wesleyan College and planning to attend medical school, Reece pivoted and finished his Bachelor of Arts in biology a year early in 1977. He then went straight to law school, earning his Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore in 1980.

For several decades, Reece has practiced law both in Texas and Hawaii. In Texas, he runs a law firm focused on criminal law, and in Hawaii, his focus is on family, personal injury, and criminal law. When his two children followed in his footsteps and attended law school, some of their experiences piqued his interest. "I watched my children study abroad and have experiences that I yearned for. At the same time, I was at a point in my career where I had the flexibility and resources to invest in enriching experiences."

Reece began to explore L.L.M. programs and was interested in international study. He was intrigued by McGeorge's L.L.M. in transactional business litigation because of the school's global reach and the flexibility of the program. He also really liked McGeorge's atmosphere and location. "McGeorge is located in one of the best areas of the country and when you set foot on campus it just feels very collegial and collaborative."

During his L.L.M. program, Reece studied abroad in Salzburg, Austria with Justice Kennedy, and had a three-month internship in West Africa. "I was having experiences that I had always dreamed about. It was a very personally fulfilling time in my life, especially the internship in Africa. I have always wanted to work in Africa for a period of time." The professors at McGeorge also stood out to Reece. "I loved Professor Stephen McCaffrey's class. His area of expertise is water law, which isn't even my area but he was so engaging and thoughtful. The class really drew me in."

Since his L.L.M., Reece continues to practice law in Hawaii and Texas. Every once in a while he will get a case in his family law practice involving a parent fleeing the country with his or her children where he leans on his transactional litigation experience, but it is the McGeorge network he finds he draws upon the most. "McGeorge has a very global reach. There are alumni everywhere.

One of the district court judges here on the big island is an alumnae and my mentor, Ernest Gianotti, '55 is also a McGeorge alumna." In the future, Reece plans to continue practicing law in Hawaii. "I enjoy the work I am doing and the location I am in. Practicing law has afforded me great experiences. I thoroughly enjoy helping my clients and I do not see myself ever retiring."
