Victor Cabo

Area of Practice: LL.M. Transnational Business Practice
Year Graduated: 2015

Hometown: Málaga, Spain
Undergraduate: University of Málaga, Spain
Major: Bachelor’s Degree in Law
Year/Track: 2013

Victor Gamero Cabo was a high school student in Malaga, Spain, when he decided he wanted to attend college in the United States.

Today, the McGeorge LL.M. alumnus has realized his dream and is readying plans to practice in the United States.

"I knew I wanted to come to America," says Victor, 27, who graduated in May 2014. "I was researching where to go after law school (in Spain) and I decided I would go to the U.S. one day, because its higher education system was best in the world."

Victor's LL.M. is in Transnational Business Practice, but while at McGeorge he also developed an interest in immigration law. He worked as a volunteer translator at the McGeorge Immigration Law Clinic and participated in McGeorge's 6th annual on-campus Immigration Fair. He plans to practice as an international attorney in business and immigration law.

Victor says he chose McGeorge because of its well-regarded International Law program (U.S. News & World Report ranks the International Law program among the top 20 nationwide), its modest costs, compared to other programs, and for the expertise and accessibility of McGeorge's professors.

"I heard a lot of feedback about the professors-that was the key for me with McGeorge," says Victor. "You see professors here who have practiced all over the world and I have really good connections with all of them."

Victor earned his Bachelor's Degree in Law from the University of Malaga, Spain, in 2013. Before entering McGeorge, he was Assistant Partner at Al-Andalus Food, a Spanish import-export company.

Victor's advice to prospective LL.M. students is practical-learn a bit about the common law system on which the U.S. legal system is built, choose classes carefully, and don't try to do too much all at once.

"They should read about common law system, because it can be very different from where they are from," says Victor. "Tell them to choose properly the subjects they want to take. I knew some people in classes they didn't want to take. Be patient-choose your schedule properly and don't overload yourself."
