Senior Financial Health & Safety Fair Meets Community Need

The Pacific McGeorge Elder & Health Law Clinic presented it first Senior Financial & Health Safety Fair on the morning of Sat. April 6, 2013 in the student center on campus.
After welcoming remarks by Katie Roe '12, the fair organizer and clinical legal fellow, the California Department of Corporations' Commissioner of Corporations Jan Lynn Owen delivered the keynote address. Professor Melissa Brown, supervising attorney for the Elder and Health Law clinic, also addressed the crowd of fair attendees.
The fair provided more than 120 seniors with a "one stop" opportunity to obtain materials, become educated about financial safety and protection, and receive free health screenings and legal check-ups. "Senior Legal Check-Ups" and consumer/debtor consultations were provided by Pacific McGeorge law students and faculty. Free blood pressure screening, vision tests, and fall assessment provided the U.C. Davis School of Medicine, Department of Public Health Sciences. Funding was made possible in part by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office on Women's Health.
Alumni attorney volunteers were Sandra Mathews '11, Rebecca Coleman '12, Christine Harlan '11, and David Snapp '11. In addition to Katie Roe and Melissa Brown, other staff and faculty participants were Dorothy Landsberg, Pauline Nguyen, Warren Jones, and Kim Buchholz. Emma Siverson '14 assisted in planning the event and coordinating the fair activities. Nearly 20 other students helped during the fair. Dr. Marius Koga spearheaded the participation of the UC Davis School of Medicine's Department of Public Health.
Seniors stopped by and gained information from booths throughout the student center. The 27 exhibitors were 211, Area 4 Agency on Aging, Asian Community Center, Pacific McGeorge Bankruptcy Clinic, Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center, Department of Corporations, Department of Financial Institutions, Department of Insurance/EFAIR, Domestic Violence Intervention Center, Pacific McGeorge Elder and Health Law Clinic, El Hogar-Senior Link, Eskaton Home Support Network, HICAP Services of N. California, Pacific McGeorge Housing Mediation Center, Gleaners (Senior Gleaners), Meals on Wheels by ACC, Multipurpose Senior Services Program, My Sister's House, Older Women's League/EFPN, Paratransit, Pioneer House, Sacramento County Adult Protective Services, Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services, Senior Legal Hotline (Legal Services of Northern California), SMUD, Victims of Crime Resource Center, and WEAVE.
