October 29, 2008
Pacific McGeorge will host a special sitting of the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 29 in its 300-seat lecture hall.
The public is invited, but auditorium seating is limited. The session will be simulcast into two adjoining classrooms to accommodate an expected overflow crowd. All persons entering the lecture hall are prohibited from carrying cell phones, purses, backpacks, laptops, cameras, etc. Lecture hall doors will close at 9:15 a.m. and court will convene promptly at 9:30. Media using film and/or audio and/or taking photographs must have a court order.
Chief Judge Alex Kozinski and Circuit Judges Sidney Thomas and Consuelo Callahan will hear appeals of decisions from the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Northern Districts of California. Audience members are invited to participate in a question-and-answer session on general procedural court issues after oral arguments.
The two cases on the docket, both appeals from rulings against state officials, involve a prisoner who claimed cruel and unusual punishment because he was not allowed adequate outdoor exercise and a successful challenge to California’s violent game video law that imposes a civil penalty on any person who sells or rents a such a game to a minor.
