Development of a New Constitution for Afghanistan

October 15, 2004

Professor Taher Hashemi from the University of Kabul Faculty of Law will speak on the development of a new constitution for Afghanistan. Prof. Hashemi attended our summer Salzburg program this past July, where he gave a similar lecture that was very well attended and very well received. His visit to Salzburg resulted from an invitation by Justice Kennedy to Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai during a meeting in Washington last June. A member of Afghanistan's Ministry of Justice also attended the Salzburg program as a result of this meeting.

Prof. Hashemi left Afghanistan with his family following the Soviet invasion in 1980, and he has lived for many years in southern California. He is one of only a handful of Afghanis who volunteered to return to Kabul after the fall of the Taliban in order to help rebuild the country. In addition to teaching a new generation of lawyers, he has been instrumental in helping to draft a new constitution for the country.
