Student Comments Highlight New Journal Issue

Five current students and one recent graduate were published in the latest edition of the Pacific McGeorge Global Business & Development Law Journal, Volume 24, Number 1, (2011).

Bianca Watts, '11, a first-year associate at Wilke, Fleury, Hoffelt, Gould & Birney LLP in Sacramento, wrote "Better than a Thousand Hollow Words Is One Word that Brings Peace: Enforcing Article 49 (6) in the Fourth Geneva Convention Against Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory."

Rebecca Coleman, '12, wrote "The Human Right of Sanitation for All: A Study of India." Lindsay McCarl, '12, contributed "Foreign Competition in U.S., Defense Contracts: Why the U.S. Government Should Favor Domestic Companies in Awarding Major Defense Procurement and Acquisition Contracts."

Micaela Neal, '12, this year's journal editor-in-chief, wrote "The Niger Delta and Human Rights Lawsuits: A Search for the Optimal Legal Regime." Jimmy Pak, '12, contributed "Re-Imagining the Wheel: Seeking a Feasible International Regime to Protect Indigenous Cultural Expressions Through Trademark Law." Darren Sweetwood, '12, authored "BlackBerry's Jam: Research In Motion's Struggle to Protect Smartphone Users' Privacy Highlights Need for Shared Industry Standards."

The new edition of "The Globe," the law review's moniker, is one of the largest in its 24-year history with 472 pages. It also features more of the papers drawn from Pacific McGeorge's October 2009 symposium, "Local to Global: Rethinking Spheres of Authority After a World Financial Crisis." Three faculty members contributed to this round of articles that were first presented at the event.

Raquel Aldana wrote, "Transforming Students, Transforming Self: The Power of Teaching Social Justice Struggles in Context," Brian Landsberg contributed "Promoting Social Justice Values and Reflective Legal Practice in Chinese Law Schools." Frank Gevurtz authored "Using Comparative and Transnational Corporate Law to Teach Corporate Social Responsibility."
