Program Honors Black Pioneer
February 13, 2008
Pacific McGeorge celebrated Black History Month with a special program honoring Charles Hamilton Houston (1895-1950) on February 12.
As dean of the Howard Law School, he trained and mentored a generation of African-American lawyers, including Thurgood Marshall. The on-campus program featured a film documentary, “The Road to Brown,” along with a discussion between Houston’s biographer, University of Baltimore Professor Jose Felipe Anderson, and Pacific McGeorge’s own civil rights expert, Professor Brian Landsberg. Among invited guests in the large lecture hall audience were descendants of Houston. A reception followed in the student center.
Program co-sponsors included the Black Law Student Association and the McGeorge chapter of the American Constitution Society. Student Theresa Esquerra played a major role as an organizer with assistance from Professor Julie Davies and Interim Assistant Dean for Student Affairs Tim Naccarato.
