Justices Kagan and Kennedy to Teach in Salzburg Summer Program

McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific will hold the annual Salzburg, Austria Summer Program from July 7 through 27, 2013. Supreme Court Associate Justices Anthony M. Kennedy and Elena Kagan will teach the Fundamental Rights in Europe and the United States course with Professor Sionaidh Douglas-Scott, Oxford University.
Salzburg, Austria has been the site of the McGeorge's annual Summer Program on International Legal Studies since 1974. Justice Kennedy has taught in Salzburg Summer Program for all but one of the past 23 years. He taught Constitutional Law as a member of the McGeorge faculty from 1965 until his appointment to the Supreme Court by President Reagan in 1988. This is Justice Kagan's first time teaching with the McGeorge Salzburg Summer Program. She was previously Dean of Harvard Law School and Solicitor General of the United States.
The three-week program in Salzburg offers international and comparative law courses in public and commercial law fields. Classes are held in the Law Faculty building of the University of Salzburg, located in a renovated 16th Century palace in the heart of Salzburg's historic Old Town.
The courses offered at the McGeorge Salzburg Summer Program are:
- Fundamental Rights in Europe and the United States, taught by Sionaidh Douglas-Scott, Professor of European and Human Rights Law at Oxford University School of Law in London; Associate Justice Anthony M. Kennedy and Associate Justice Elena Kagan
- Foreign Relations Law, taught by John Sims, Professor of Law at McGeorge School of Law
- International Dispute Resolution, taught by Joseph Smallhoover, Adjunct Professor and Managing Partner of Bryan Cave LLP, Paris
- European Union Law for International Business, taught by Patrick Warto, Professor at University of Salzburg
In addition to law students and graduates from the United States, the program seeks to enroll students from other countries. In 2013, approximately 20 non-U.S. students from countries including Austria, Saudi Arabia, Denmark, Turkey, France and Spain are expected to enroll. Other summer study abroad programs offered by McGeorge are in Antigua, Guatemala (May 25 to June 15), Kampala, Uganda (May 19 to June 8) and St. Petersburg, Russia (June 10- July 26).
