Client Counselors Take Third Place
February 17, 2009
Sean DeBurgh, ’09, and Catherine Mattesich, ’10, took third place in the ABA Region 9 Client Counseling Competition held February 7 and 8 in Seattle, Washington.
The host Seattle University School of Law team emerged from the nine-team field and advanced to the national finals in March in North Carolina, but not before getting a strong challenge from the Pacific McGeorge team and a UC Hastings team in a three-way regional finale.
The Seattle regional featured a particularly strong field and DeBurgh and Mattesich had get by to perennial powerhouses Hawaii and UNLV to make it to the second day of the competition.
“Sean and Katie were outstanding,” said Professor Kathleen Friedrich, the team’s advisor. “They received tremendous praise for their performances, eliciting comments such as ‘masterful use if open-ended questions’ and ‘brilliant legal analysis’ from the judges.”
DeBurgh and Mattesich trained with five other students, Dustin Bankston, ’11, Cheryl Shibata, ’10, Audreyell Anderson, ’11, Melissa Johnson, ’10, and J.R. Davis, ’09, for the event.
“We’ve had a degree of success in the competition in previous years, but we’ve created a framework for even more success in the future,” Friedrich said. “All these students were selected from a competitive process in the fall semester and they contributed to our team’s excellent showing in Seattle.”
