Bowen Discusses Election
November 17, 2008
California Secretary of State Debra Bowen spoke on campus on November 13, 2008 at a forum co-sponsored by the Pacific McGeorge student chapter of the American Constitution Society.
Bowen discussed the legal and political issues that arose in the November 4th general election and answered questions from the audience, which included Sacramento area attorney and law students from UC Davis and Pacific McGeorge.
Although there is no confirmation from her office yet and absentee ballots are still being counted in some counties, Bowen said she expected final figures will show a record turnout of state voters participated in the election. More than one million Californians registered to vote in the months leading up to the election, catapulting the state’s total number of registered voters to an all-time high of more than 17.3 million.
“Voter interest in this historic election was enormous,” she said. “It was great to see so many Californians taking an active role in their democracy.”
