Faculty Services

The Gordon D. Schaber Law Library is dedicated to providing support for the teaching, research and scholarship needs of our faculty. We offer several specific services towards this goal.

Librarian Liaisons

Each faculty member has a library assigned to them as their primary contact for library services. These services cover a wide range of activities, including but not limited to:

  • Research assistance
  • Resource acquisition (interlibrary loan or via the faculty member’s Scholarship fund)
  • Specialized in-class presentations (research or substantive, as requested)
  • Training on electronic databases (TWEN, Westlaw, Lexis, etc.) (group or individual)
  • Current awareness resources (monitoring or setting up clipping services)
  • Training of and working with the faculty member’s research assistant(s)

Each librarian liaison is also responsible for the library’s collection development efforts in particular topic areas, which are matched as closely as possible with the primary known research interests of their assigned faculty members. Faculty members are encouraged to suggest materials for library acquisition, or may be asked their opinion of materials under consideration. This coordination of function serves to strengthen the breadth and quality of the collection as well as help the librarian liaison maintain an awareness of their faculty members’ interests and ongoing research activities.

Library Research Assistants program

In 2005 the law library began a new service, providing research assistance to the faculty via Library Research Assistants. Many faculty members do not have research assistants; others do, but sometimes have more work than their RAs can handle. To fill perceived gaps, the library hired and trained several RAs who are made available to faculty upon request. Research projects may be simple and short-term, or more involved and lengthy. The assigned library research assistant will work closely with your librarian liaison to ensure that, whatever the project is, it is completed to the best of our ability in as timely a fashion as possible.

For more information about this faculty service, or to make a request for the services of a library research assistant, please contact  James Wirrell.

Presentations and Research Guides

Your librarian liaison is available to provide a research presentation for any of your classes. The focus of the research presentation may be either general in nature or on a particular topic or area of law. These sessions vary in length, depending on the preference of the instructor and available class time. You may also request a tailored research guide in addition to, or in lieu of, a research presentation.

Some presentations in the current academic year have been in the following classes:

  • Advanced International Trade Law
  • Copyright
  • European Union Law
  • International Advocacy
  • Internet Law
  • Labor Law
  • Legal Process (several sessions with different instructors)
  • Legislation (Federal Legislative History Research)

Some of the research guides developed this academic year include:

  • Bibliography and Research Guide for International Advocacy 2005-2006
  • How to Begin Federal Tax Research
  • How to Shepardize in Print
  • Researching European Union Law
  • Researching International Trade and the WTO
