Bio

As a first-generation college graduate, Kitty Tetrault worked her way through high school and college and learned to navigate her way through college and law school admissions all on her own. Kitty knew that she wanted to go to law school from the time she was in high school in the Sacramento area, when she recognized that the law would help her pursue her lifelong passion of helping her community.

After graduating from UC Davis, Kitty was ready to mail her acceptance letter to another law school when she made a last-minute campus visit to McGeorge.

"The faculty and students were so warm and inviting," says Kitty. "After talking with them and learning about the extensive programs offered here, I knew that McGeorge was where I was meant to be."

And Kitty had a very successful first year. She won the Ben Franz Mock Trial Competition and received the Best Closing Argument Award, and she was awarded a research assistant position with Professor Rachael Salcido for her second year.

Before coming to law school, she made it a point to keep an open mind regarding what type of law she would eventually practice. "I enjoyed all of my classes so much my first year, so I made making a decision really difficult." But after taking criminal law and talking with her mentors, she made the decision to become a prosecutor. "It's perfect because it will give me the ability to make my community a better place while at the same time enable me to work in a courtroom, which is where I love to be most."

Kitty says that the people at McGeorge make it special. "The faculty are fantastic," she says. "They truly care about our success and dedicate themselves to making sure we understand the subject. And while it is of course competitive, the students here really help and support each other."

Kitty looks forward to pursuing a career in criminal law over her next two years at McGeorge. She is now competing on the mock trial team and is improving her skills as a courtroom attorney every day. And she hopes that when she graduates, she can become a prosecutor and help make the community where she grew up a better place.

Kitty received the 2016 Ferris-White Prize.
