Profile

Jacob Flesher was encouraged to go to law school by his future wife — she had a prescient feeling that he would be better suited at working in law than with his two hands on his grandfather's farm. She was right. In 2000, he graduated from McGeorge with a Juris Doctor degree with an emphasis in advocacy. His first job was working as a Deputy District Attorney for Ventura County.

Flesher says that McGeorge provided him with the foundation to walk into a courtroom right after he passed the bar to try his first case. He has immense gratitude for McGeorge's trial advocacy program. "Because of McGeorge's trial advocacy program, I got my first two jobs and have a network of terrific lawyers who are also lifelong friends," Flesher added. "It has grown to be a nationally-recognized training ground for future lawyers under Professor Cary Bricker's and Professor Jay Leach's leadership. I look forward to watching the program continue to thrive."

In 2001, Flesher returned to Sacramento to join his McGeorge trial advocacy team coach, Bill Barry, at a civil trial firm. Now, he serves as a civil trial lawyer at Flesher Schaff & Schroeder, Inc.

Flesher savors the opportunity to work with partners who collaborate and push each other to constantly elevate the quality of their work. "We have some really outstanding clients who give us the freedom to try their cases for them," he said. "I really enjoy trying cases. It's the closest adrenaline rush I could ever hope to find in a career short of being a professional athlete which was never going to happen."

Flesher has represented railroad companies, property owners, small businesses, professional athletes, nonprofits, and insurance carriers. Much of his work has revolved around employment and accident lawsuits involving transportation companies and railways. Lexis Nexis named his recent trial as its national case of the week in February 2017.

Additionally, he is an associate in the Sacramento Valley Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates, member of the National Association of Railroad Counsel, and serves as a board member for the California State Railroad Museum Foundation.

Flesher's advice to the next generation of McGeorge students: "Find good mentors who are going to help you in and out of law school." The advice has served Flesher well. A former adjunct faculty member at McGeorge, he is well-equipped to mentor future students thanks to his Alma matter.
