Full Profile

Haley Hansen, '14, can't say exactly what her inspiration was, but she distinctly remembers coming home from school one day in fourth grade and declaring to her family that she wanted to be a lawyer. "I never wavered in my goals once I decided I wanted to become a lawyer but as I learned more about the legal profession, I did discover the great capacity that lawyers have to help their clients and that only strengthened my desire." Prior to attending McGeorge, Hansen received her undergraduate degrees in political science and environmental studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

When it came time to choose a law school, Hansen liked that there was a well-known and highly ranked law school in her hometown of Sacramento. Once she began attending McGeorge, she discovered many opportunities to build her career. From the welcoming and open faculty to the legal clinics, Hansen attributes much of her career preparation to the opportunities she had at McGeorge. "After passing the bar exam, I remember I was sworn in as an attorney on a Tuesday and literally had to go to court on Wednesday. I was nervous, but going to court that day was a great experience and I attribute it to all the practice I had at McGeorge. I was able to get my 'jitters' out in a classroom setting before I was in front of a real judge in a real courtroom because of the excellent legal clinics at McGeorge."

In addition to the opportunities McGeorge gave her to gain practical experience, it also gave her a chance learn more about the policy making work going on in the State Capitol. "Because of McGeorge's location, we had great opportunities to attend workshops and events surrounding policymaking. With my background as a political science major I found them particularly interesting and am impressed by the number of McGeorge alums who work in careers that shape politics and policy."

Hansen currently uses the skills she gained at McGeorge as an associate attorney specializing in toxic tort litigation at Selman Breitman, LLP, a law firm in San Francisco. "I love the work I do at my current firm because I help clients through problems that are putting them in danger. I especially like it when I have the opportunity to help little mom and pop shops that may not have even known they had a problem."

Prior to her current position, Hansen worked for a McGeorge alumnus in Sacramento with his own firm, practicing landlord-tenant law. In the future, she looks forward to continuing her growth at her current firm and possibly starting a firm of her own. "Each day I gain experience going to court and taking depositions. I also go home knowing I did everything I could to help my clients that day. I want to continue to help people and maybe even start a firm of my own someday."
