Gil Vega

Attorney, Law Office of Gilbert B. Vega
Year Graduated: 2009

Undergraduate: UC Davis
Major: History

Gil Vega is a solo practitioner who opened his own law firm-the Law Office of Gilbert B. Vega-in 2012.  His practice focuses on criminal defense, and he represents clients in misdemeanor and felony cases in both state and federal court in California.  Mr. Vega also practices in bankruptcy law, guiding individuals through the Chapter 7 bankruptcy process.  He was attracted to these practice areas because he felt they were areas of the law where he could truly help people.  He finds the ability to do so, and the intellectual challenge of interpreting and applying constantly-evolving criminal law, very rewarding.

During his time at McGeorge, Mr. Vega participated in the Moot Court Program and interned with the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.  He credits those experiences as providing solid, hands-on practice that prepared him for his career.  For example, as a member of the Moot Court Honors Board, Mr. Vega competed in two national moot court competitions and served as a student coach, writing appellate memoranda and arguing issues ranging from criminal procedure to civil rights.  And, as an intern at the District Attorney's Office, Mr. Vega drafted and argued suppression motions and trial motions and arraigned misdemeanor defendants-he saw the criminal justice system in action first-hand.

Because Mr. Vega found the Moot Court Program and internship experiences to be so valuable, he encourages current students to seek out similar practice-oriented classes and programs in whichever area of law interests them.  To that end, he has been actively involved as an alumni coach in McGeorge's Moot Court Program every year since he graduated in 2009.  He has coached teams in both the National Criminal Procedure Tournament and the Andrews Kurth Kenyon Moot Court National Championship.  He enjoys working with those students to help them develop essential practical skills and knowledge.
