Study Abroad

Students at Pacific McGeorge can take advantage of several programs to help give their law school experience a more global flavor. Along with exchange programs, we have developed relationships with many institutions to help our students gain international perspective and insight.

Antigua, Guatemala

May 25 to June 15, 2013 (field placements until Aug. 9, 2013)

The Inter-American Summer Program in Guatemala is a truly bilingual and inter-cultural approach to legal education. It offers substantive law classes about Latin America taught in Spanish and English as well as bilingual field placements. It allows students the opportunity to study with Latin American students. Program participants will gain professional legal and inter-cultural experience useful in the practice of law in Latin America or to work with Latino issues and clients in the United States.

Salzburg, Austria

July 7 to July 27, 2013

Salzburg, Austria has been the site of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law annual Summer Program on International Legal Studies since 1974. The three-week program in Salzburg offers international and comparative law courses in public and commercial law fields. Courses are taught by European and American faculty. Supreme Court Associate Justices Anthony M. Kennedy and Elena Kagan will teach the Fundamental Rights in Europe and the United States course with Professor Sionaidh Douglas-Scott, Oxford University.

Uganda, Africa

May 19 to June 8, 2013 (field placements until July 26, 2013)

Pacific McGeorge is offering a new program in Kampala, Uganda pending approval by the University. The program has been approved by the American Bar Association for the Summer of 2013. Students may participate in field placements in Uganda or Lesotho, or enroll in a Law & Development Practicum, in which students will spend three weeks working on projects in a court or legal office. Ugandan law students will study with the U.S. students. The field placements and practicum are supported by the International Law Institute-African Centre for Legal Excellence (ILI-ACLE). Through the program, students will gain an invaluable inter-cultural experience and contribute to the development of the legal infrastructure of the Ugandan justice system.

St. Petersburg, Russia

June 29 to July 27, 2013

The St. Petersburg Summer Law Institute is sponsored by the University of Arkansas School of Law, Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and Pacific McGeorge. The Summer Law Institute represents a continuing educational relationship between the U.S. schools, the St. Petersburg State University Law Faculty and the Novgorod State University Law Faculty. Students will be introduced to a variety of comparative, foreign, and international law subjects, taught by American and Russian faculty.

Semester Abroad Exchange Programs

Add a true international dimension to your J.D. program by participating in a Semester Abroad Exchange Program, spending a semester studying law at a university in another country. Pacific McGeorge currently has exchange agreements with six different universities:

Approved classes taken at these universities will qualify for credit towards your J.D. degree. Some of these universities teach a full array of courses in English; others require proficiency in the local language. Download the Semester Abroad Exchange Program description sheet (pdf).
