Inter-American Summer Program in Guatemala

Are you interested in developing professional legal and inter-cultural experience useful for work with Spanish-speaking clients in the U.S.?

Would you like to learn side-by-side with Latin American law students and lawyers?

Whether you speak Spanish fluently or have only basic proficiency, the Inter-American Program offers options for you to learn about the legal systems of Latin America, immerse yourself in the Spanish language, and study in the beautiful Spanish colonial city of Antigua, Guatemala, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pacific McGeorge School of Law is partnering with the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law to offer the innovative Inter-American Summer Program. Gonzaga University School of Law, in Spokane, Washington, is also affiliated with the program.

Dates for 2014

Courses: May 31 to June 20
Field Placement: June 23 to Aug. 8

The Inter-American Summer Program in Guatemala is a truly bilingual and inter-cultural approach to legal education. It offers comparative and transnational substantive law classes about Latin America taught in Spanish and English as well as bilingual field placements and legal Spanish immersion. It allows students the opportunity to study with Latin American students.

To encourage participation from as many students and recent law graduates as possible, the program is designed to accommodate the learning objectives and needs of participants with varying degrees of Spanish proficiency:

  • Beginning level Spanish speakers may enroll in a substantive law course taught in English and Spanish language lessons.
  • Intermediate level Spanish speakers may combine the Lawyers Across Borders course taught primarily in Spanish with a substantive law course taught in English or a substantive law class taught in Spanish.
  • Fluent Spanish speakers may enroll in two substantive law classes taught in Spanish.

Course descriptions can be found on the Guatemala Courses page.

Field placements through Pacific McGeorge are available with agencies and organizations working in the fields of environmental justice, criminal law, civil law, commerce and trade, human rights, economic development, and immigration relations. They include placements with prominent government, non-governmental, private, and international institutions, as well as placements with the highest courts in Latin America. Field placements are offered not only in Guatemala, but also in Costa Rica, Chile, and Uruguay.

Externships are also offered by the University of Denver at leading private law firms in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Spain, Uruguay, and Venezuela. For more information about the University of Denver’s externships see: http://www.law.du.edu/index.php/lawyering-in-spanish/lis-overseas-externships/firm-descriptions.
