Field Placement/Externship in Uganda or Lesotho — June 10 to July 26, 2013

As a new field placement opportunity, students may enroll in a seven-week externship for four (4) units of credit in Kampala, Uganda, or in Maseru, Lesotho. Students will be individually placed in courts, government agencies, non-government organizations, or law firms, all with a legal focus in either Uganda or Lesotho. The externships will be arranged by the International Law Institute-African Centre for Legal Excellence (ILI-ACLE), which has offices in Kampala, Uganda, and in Maseru, Lesotho. The seven-week format will accommodate students who want to participate in the 3-week Law and Development Practicum in Kampala and then do the externship.

For the Uganda and Lesotho externships, students will have the benefit of a relationship with ILI-ACLE staff, who will monitor the externships. The ILI-ACLE staff will serve as a resource for the students who have questions about logistics in Kampala or Maseru, about the legal research, or other matters. The ILI-ACLE staff will function as the on-site administrators for the externships.

Consistent with other McGeorge externships, students will be required to submit journal entries throughout the externship. These entries will be read by McGeorge faculty, who will respond to them. In addition, all students engaged in international externships will be required to participate in a one-day seminar on their return that focuses on intercultural legal competence experiences. If students are unable to participate in person in the seminar, arrangements will be made for participation through video conferencing, if available, or through a written paper at the discretion of the seminar's professor.

Students from ABA-accredited law schools, who have completed at least their first year of studies and are in good standing with their home institution, may apply to the program. Students from non-U.S. law schools, who have a comparable legal studies background to the first year of a J.D. program and are in good standing with their home institution, are also eligible to apply. Limited spaces are available and there will be a selection committee that will review applications.
