Summer Program in Salzburg Tuition, Fees and Policies
Admissions
The summer program is open to students and graduates of ABA-approved or state-accredited law schools and fully-accredited foreign law schools.
Enrollment Policy and Information
U.S. non-McGeorge students must submit a letter of good standing from their home institution.
Scholars from throughout Europe have traditionally been attracted to the beautiful setting offered by Salzburg. In addition to law students and graduates from the United States, the Pacific McGeorge summer program regularly enrolls students from several foreign countries, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, United Arab Republic, Spain and Turkey. In 2012, 50 students participated in the Salzburg Program. Of those students, 20 came from Pacific McGeorge School of Law, two came from other ABA-approved law schools, and 28 were foreign students. In 2013, it is expected that approximately 20 non-U.S. students will enroll in the program.
Due to limitations on housing and other facilities, only 90 students from American law schools can be accepted into the program in 2013. If that limit is reached, a waiting list will be established. Applications will be processed on a "first to apply/first accepted" basis. Enrollment is honored when the $250 deposit is paid in full. Because the program is quickly filling, students are now advised to submit the deposit with their application.

Law School Credit Information
Law School Credit: The Summer Program in Salzburg has been fully approved by the American Bar Association and is on the approved list of programs.
Students enrolled in law schools other than Pacific McGeorge should check with their appropriate school official regarding procedures to follow for transfer of credit earned from participation in either classroom courses or externships toward fulfilling degree requirements. Acceptance of any credit or grade for any course taken in the program, is subject to determination by the student's home law school.
Participation in a foreign summer program may not meet requirements to accelerate graduation. Students should consult their home institutions for advice about residency requirements under relevant ABA standards if they seek to accelerate their graduation.
Tuition & Mandatory Program Fees
Tuition
- $900/semester unit — due July 1, 2013
Students may enroll for two (2), three (3) or four (4) semester units of credit.
Tuition payments must be paid in full in Sacramento by July 1, 2013. Students who fail to pay by this date will be deemed to have canceled and will be withdrawn from the program.
Registration Deposit
- $250 — May 1, 20131 | Pay Deposit

Mandatory Administrative Fee
- $250 — due July 1, 2013
The mandatory administrative fee includes course materials, receptions and closing dinner, and excursions to legal institutions.
Mandatory Housing Fee
The housing fee is based on the type of housing assigned to you. We will do our best to honor your first or second choice but housing assignments are subject to space availability. We will assign housing based on the order that applications, accompanied by deposit, are received in our office. Housing fees are due July 1, 2013.
- Single Room with Private Shower — $1,350
- Shared Double Room with Private Shower — $1,100 per person
- Single Room without Private Shower (showers available on the floor) — $850
The housing fee for all room options includes breakfast buffet, change of towels twice weekly, change of bed linens weekly, and cable internet access with deposit (Wifi in reception areas but not in the rooms). Washing machines, shared kitchen facilities (in the primary residence building), TV rooms, and a small fitness room are available for student use.
Housing will be available for occupancy beginning Saturday, July 6, 2013 with departure set for Saturday, July 27, 2013.
Accompanying Person
- $1,250 — due July 1, 2013
Non-students may accompany persons enrolled in the program on a space-available basis. The accompanying person fee includes shared lodging, breakfast, dinner and receptions, and program-related social activities. Accompanying persons may not attend classes, but may attend tours or excursions to legal institutions on a space available basis.
The cost of airfare, meal costs other than the organized events and dinner, and personal expenses are not included.
Disclosures — Program Changes, Cancellations, and Refunds
Adjustments
Class schedules, lecturers, and topics covered (i.e., the "syllabus") may be adjusted based on availability of lecturers or facilities. Visits to legal institutions or other tours and events may be altered based on the availability of facilities, guides, or lecturers, etc. Students will be provided with as much notice as possible and appropriate substitution will be provided.
Adjustments will not substantially affect the content of the program, and do not constitute a "substantial modification" of the program.
Cancellations or Modifications
Unforeseen events beyond our control may require substantial modification or cancellation of a program. If the Program is canceled, students will be immediately notified by email, and will be given the opportunity to enroll in another McGeorge summer abroad programs, or to enroll, if possible, in another ABA approved summer abroad program. Among the reasons a program may be cancelled or modified are the following:
- Area of Instability. If the US State Department Consular Information Sheet for the country in which the program is conducted indicates that it is an "area of instability," students will be promptly notified, and the program will be cancelled or modified. Even if the country has not been officially deemed an "area of instability," McGeorge School of Law may cancel or substantially modify a program where it deems the risk of harm to be at an unacceptable level.
- Travel Warning. If, prior to the commencement of a program or during the course of a program, a serious U.S. State Department Travel Warning is issued for the country in which the program will be conducted, students will be promptly notified of the warning and be given an opportunity to withdraw from the program.
- War, civil unrest, terror threats, epidemics, or health hazards which pose unacceptable risks of harm to participants.
- Unforeseen events, such as fires, extreme weather, or natural disasters, which render the classrooms or other site facilities including student housing unavailable or unsuitable for use.
- Labor unrest or strikes which make transportation to the site or the use of essential facilities at the site impossible, unduly difficult or hazardous.
- Incapacity or unavailability of key or necessary faculty or personnel, for which no substitute can be arranged in a timely manner.
- Low enrollment. Programs that have fewer than thirty admitted students as of April 1, 2013 are subject to cancellation. The School of Law will promptly notify admitted students of any cancellation or substantial modification and the reasons therefore.
Refund Policy
If the program is cancelled for the reasons as set out above, students will receive a full refund of all payments made within 20 days, except for the room and board payments utilized prior to the date of cancelation.
For withdrawal made prior to May 15, students will receive a refund of all monies advanced except for the deposit.
For withdrawal made after May 15 but prior to the first date of the program (July 7, 2013), students will only be refunded tuition. All other fees will be forfeited.
For withdrawal during the course of the program, all fees including tuition are forfeited.
Grading
Grading will comport with McGeorge's grading practices. Students attending from other law schools should seek guidance from their home institution as to whether course units will credited and how grades will be reported on their official transcripts.
Class Attendance, Preparation, Participation & Performance
Regular and punctual class attendance is mandatory and required by the American Bar Association. The faculty expects that you will be fully prepared and that you will actively participate in class. The faculty is required to take class attendance, preparation, participation, and performance into consideration in grading. Your attendance and active involvement in class discussion form a central part of the learning process in law school for you and your classmates. Failure to meet the minimum standards set by your professors may result in a lower grade, or exclusion from taking the final examination, resulting in a failing grade.
Financial Aid
Important — If you expect to have funds from your financial aid office deposited to your bank account after you arrive in Austria, be sure to bring enough money to cover your expenses for several days. The program sponsors cannot cash personal checks in Salzburg that are drawn on a U.S. bank. Pacific McGeorge students should discuss availability of Financial Aid with the school's Financial Aid Office.
Students from other law schools should contact the financial aid office of their home insititution.
Lodging in Salzburg
Students will be housed in either single or double rooms. Housing will be in one of three student residence halls. All facilities are located in the city of Salzburg within walking distance of the Faculty of Law and the central business district.
Lodging includes a daily breakfast. While every effort is made to honor the request for single or double rooms, rooms are assigned on a first come, first-served basis, and room preference cannot be guaranteed.
Accommodations and Other Policies
Every effort is made to accommodate persons with physical, medical and/or learning disabilities; however, Pacific McGeorge cannot ensure that the housing and classroom facilities used in the Salzburg summer program will meet the same standards for accessibility as do the facilities of the school's campus in Sacramento. Persons with disabilities that affect mobility should particularly note that historic European cities such as Salzburg present significant barriers to mobility over which Pacific McGeorge has no control.
Travel Information
The U.S. Department of State lists current travel advisories, if any, for Austria.
Passports/Visas
A passport is a document issued by your government allowing you to travel abroad. A visa is a permit issued by the government you are planning to visit allowing you to enter that country. Passports and visas are the responsibility of the student.
United States citizens can obtain a passport application from the nearest U.S. Department of State Passport Office or from certain State and Federal courts and post offices. If you lose your passport while in Austria, contact the nearest U.S. embassy immediately.
United States students and citizens of EU and Schengen countries do not need a visa to enter Austria.
To avoid any delay in obtaining your visa or passport, be sure to apply as early as possible.
Medical & Travel Insurance
Medical and travel insurance is required to participate in the Salzburg program. If you are a student at McGeorge and have student medical plan, you are covered while abroad, including travel assistance with evacuation benefits that meet most Visa requirements. Students who have other private medical or travel insurance should check their insurance plans to ascertain if the plan extends while away abroad.
If your plan does not cover illness or emergencies while traveling outside of your country, you are strongly encouraged to purchase temporary medical insurance for non-emergency and emergency medical expenses, including coverage for emergency air transportation, which is usually quite costly.
Students who enroll in the Summer Program will be required to provide a proof of medical insurance. We will retain these materials only for the duration of the program. To request more information about student medical insurance policies, contact Graduate and International Programs.
