Pacific McGeorge Alum coaches CUPL Advocacy Team to Victory

December 2010

The China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) Advocacy team, coached by Professor Jingbo Dong LL.M '08, was awarded first place in the Eighth Annual  "Li Lv" Chinese National Moot Court competition in December 2010.  It was the first time that CUPL won a national championship in a Moot Court competition. In this endeavor Dong states, "I appreciate all my professors and friends at McGeorge".

Li Lv competition

There were a total of 26 teams from 19 Chinese provinces that participated in the competition.  Some of those included: Beijing University, Qinghua University, Renmin University, China University of Political Science and Law, East China University of Political Science and Law, West China University of Political Science and Law, South-west China University of Political Science and Law and Wuhan University.

Professor Dong explained that the competition problem involved a "joint venture-contract dispute between a foreign investor and Chinese company (former government agency).  The major issue addressed was whether the main clauses in the contract that regulates damage arising out of  Chinese law change will be undertaken by  Chinese party are valid or the conditions are met or not".

Each team was made up of about four students, with three judges in each round. There were a total of five rounds, eight out of twenty-six teams were advanced after the first two rounds, four teams after the third round, and two after the second.  The CUPL team took first place in the final round.

Domestic Williem C. Vis Moot competition

In November 2010, Professor Dong also lead the CUPL team to place 6th in the Eighth CIETAC  Cup International  Commercial Arbitration Moot, a domestic competition of  the Williem C.Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot.  One of the CUPL law students received the award for Best Oralist in the competition, which was held in English.

Professor Dong enrolled in the LL.M. in the Teaching of Advocacy program at Pacific McGeroge in the Fall of 2007 and completed the program in Spring 2008.  She was one of five Chinese professors, sponsored by a grant awarded to Pacific McGeorge by the United States Agency for International Development on Experiential Legal Education in China.
