Erin Norwood

Partner, Norwood & Associates
Year Graduated: 2014, M.S.L. - Government & Public Policy Concentration

Undergraduate: Sacramento State University
Major: Communications Studies

Erin Norwood was born in raised in Sacramento and has followed her father's footsteps, both as a McGeorge graduate and as a member of Norwood and Associates lobbying group.

Her career as a legislative lobbyist is one that Erin and her family say that she was born to do, and she admits that she has a competitive streak. "I hate to lose," she said.

The new Master of Science in Law at McGeorge was the perfect degree for Erin's career, she says.

"The industries I represent-insurance, finance, cable and telecommunications and pharmaceuticals--are highly litigious. I desired to have a better understanding of the law, legal analysis and legal reasoning but I didn't want or need a JD. The MSL program gave me the opportunity to choose the curriculum and training that were most pertinent to my career as a governmental advocate," said Erin.

The deeper legal understand Erin has gained through her MSL degree has a direct impact on her work. She notes that of the more than 2000 bills introduced each year in California, she is directly involved in at least 100 of them.

"With my new knowledge of legal analysis and reasoning, I am more confident in my interactions with legislators, colleagues, and my clients," said Erin.

Because her father is a JD graduate of McGeorge, Erin felt confident in choosing the school for her studies, but she says that the flexibility of the MSL program was even better than she anticipated. To students considering the program, she said, "Associate Deans Landsberg and Kelso and the amazing faculty and staff will ensure you get the program that best suits your needs.  I can't say enough about how incredible the program is."

Although she's usually active and energetic--"If I am not at work you'll find me in the gym, wine tasting, traveling or at a baseball game," said Erin--a major back injury made her last semester at McGeorge difficult.  "Completing my degree showed me I can overcome even the most challenging of circumstances," said Erin.

Erin was chosen to deliver the commencement address--the first MSL graduate to do so--at McGeorge's spring 2015 ceremony. Although she says she "was a nervous wreck" the week before the event, Erin said, "Knowing my parents were so proud of me for being up there made it all worth it."
