Undergraduate: St. John’s College (Santa Fe)

Profile

Eric Woods advises students thinking about law school to figure out what type of law practice is going to give them the most personal satisfaction. He speaks from experience, having tried several areas of the law before finding that plaintiff's personal injury cases were what he enjoyed most.

"When I applied to law school, I really had very little idea of what attorneys do," says Eric. An attorney who visited one of Eric's high school classes sparked his interest in the career, and he applied to law school hoping to help people through his practice.

Eric describes some of the hands-on learning experiences at McGeorge that prepared him for his career: drafting a defense motion for the County Public Defender's office as an intern, preparing briefs for a Moot Court case, conducting direct examination in Advanced Evidence class, and working at the European Common Market as part of his LLM program.

"Participating in the legal system, or activities modeled on it, helped me understand what the law and law practice are all about," says Eric.

Soon after leaving McGeorge, Eric realized he wanted to have his own law firm. For 10 years he did general practice and worked as a Municipal Court Alternate Judge. He represented paying clients as well as those clients without sufficient funds to pay for legal services. He worked with immigration clients and obtained political asylum for many of them, and he also did criminal defense work.

Eventually, Eric started handling personal injury cases. "I found that these cases challenged me and I enjoyed them," he says. "The most rewarding part for me is obtaining justice for my clients, who are victims of the negligence of other individuals and companies."

As Eric has found since getting his degree from McGeorge, finding a fulfilling path is a far different challenge than getting a degree. He says, "The law degree just opens the door."

Today Eric is the Managing Attorney at the Law Offices of Eric Woods in Las Vegas, Nev.
