Visiting Salzburg - Information & Tips

Air Reservations

The cost of airfare is not included in the tuition for the Summer Institute in Salzburg. Because of the diversity of departure points from the U.S., arrival points in Europe and travel dates for those wanting to sightsee before or after the program, it is not possible for the law school to arrange group flights or rates.

Salzburg has its own airport, but flying directly into Salzburg may cost more than using one of the major airports. However, the emergence of discount airlines in Europe has lowered the cost of flights within the European Union, and thus it is worth shopping around for flights directly into Salzburg that may be competitive in price with flights to other airports.

The closest major international airport to Salzburg is the Munich International Airport, which is approximately two hours away by train. The Munich airport is connected to the main rail station by local train. From the main station, there are frequent trains to the Salzburg rail station ( Salzburg Hauptbahnhof). Get information on rail service from Munich to Salzburg.

The Vienna airport is located just over three hours away by train. It is also connected to the main rail stations by local trains. Get information on rail service from Vienna to Salzburg.

Luxembourg, Frankfurt and Zurich airports are the favored destinations of charter and discount flights onto the Continent, and each of these locations also provides relatively easy access to Salzburg by rail.

There are many travel search engines that can help you with your air travel reservations, including: Orbitz; Travelocity, Expedia, Mobissimo, and Sidestep. Student discounts are sometimes available through student travel services, such as Student Universe and Statravel. Other good travel resources are travel agents and travel sections of major newspapers.

When planning your trip, be advised that discounted fares often require advance purchase and are usually subject to substantial penalties for schedule changes.

Common German Terms & Phrases

German is the official language in Austria, but English is widely understood. Here are some useful German words and phrases (and pronunciations).

Etiquette/Tipping

Restaurants

  • You are expected to seat yourself in most Austrian restaurants.
  • You will not receive your bill until you request it from the server.
  • Do not leave tips on the table. Rather, when paying the bill, indicate to the server the total amount that you are leaving (bill plus tip). For instance, if the bill is EUR 30 and you are leaving a 10% tip, tell the server to “make it 33.”
  • It is considered polite to round up your bill to the nearest euro whether or not you leave a tip.
  • Unless the menu indicates that service is included (Preise inclusiv or Bedienung inclusiv), tip servers about 10%. Most restaurant bills do include 10% service, but an additional amount not to exceed 5% is appropriate. If it is unclear whether service has been added, you should ask the server.

Taxis

  • Taxi drivers are tipped 10% of the meter reading or the agreed fare. There may also be extra charges for luggage carried in the trunk.

Money Matters

Cash Machines (ATMs)
ATM and debit cards normally offer the easiest and least expensive way to convert American dollars into European currency. There are ATMs located throughout Europe and are the standard way for American travelers to change money. If you plan to use an ATM or debit card be aware of the following:

Many banks charge a conversion fee when withdrawing cash from foreign ATMs (usually around $1.50 - $3.00 per transaction). You may also pay a fee ranging from $2 to $5 to the bank owning the ATM. It is best to make as few withdrawals as possible.

European ATMs work similar to American ATMS and usually have English-language instructions . However, if necessary, it is advisable to change your PIN number before leaving for Europe, as many European keypads have only numbers and allow only four-digit PINs.

Credit Cards
Visa and MasterCard are the most widely accepted credit cards. American Express is less commonly accepted. However, if you have an American Express card, the local American Express office will cash personal checks drawn on a U.S. bank.

Currency Conversion
Be aware of the value of the dollar in Europe.

Traveler's Checks
Traveler's checks function similar to cash, but are replaceable if lost or stolen. It is always a good idea to bring some traveler’s checks along in the event you are not able to get to an ATM or if the nearest ATM is broken.

Weather
The temperatures in Salzburg in the summer can range from cool to hot – 3 weeks; 3 seasons; no snow! – so it is best to bring a light sweater, rain repellent jacket, and comfortable shoes and clothing. An umbrella is always advisable in Salzburg, as rain is common throughout the year.
