SALT Human Rights Delegation Travels To Guatemala:
In December 2010, members of the Pacific McGeorge Inter-American Program formed part of a human rights delegation sponsored by the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT). This delegation, composed primarily of law professors, traveled to Guatemala to accompany and support Jennifer Harbury, an American whose Guatemalan husband was tortured and murdered in the mid-1990's. The group went for the purpose of monitoring the progress of trials that have finally begun in an effort to bring to justice members of the Guatemalan military who were responsible for genocide against the country's indigenous population and other human rights atrocities during the country's decades-long civil war. On the trip, the delegation met with non-governmental organizations, survivors of the genocide, and human rights lawyers. Luis Mogollon, Pacific McGeorge Inter-American Program consultant, represented Pacific McGeorge, and students from the Inter-American Program (Ana Lucía and María Christina Barrios and Juan Manuel de la Cruz Estrada) served as translators for the delegation. To read a full report about the delegations activities and findings, look at the group's blog.
